Seriously, you guys. I can’t get over how stinkin’ adorable this DIY scalloped stripe pillow is! The black and white color combo is perfection, those sweet ruffly scallops are my favorite, and the metallic gold heart is just the icing on the cake. *swoon*
Do you remember when I painted my scalloped stripe accent wall with FrogTape® Shape Tape™ a few months ago? Ever since then I’ve had about a half dozen scalloped stripe projects floating around in my mind just waiting for me to get a spare moment. This sweet pillow was the quickest and easiest project on my to-make list, so I tackled it first, and I’m thrilled with the way that it turned out!
What You’ll Need:
- FrogTape’s Shape Tape (available at Lowes, Walmart and Menards stores)
- Cotton or cotton/poly blend pillow case (Note: I used a zippered 20″x24″ pillow protector that I picked up at Walmart for $3 to save time since the zipper was already sewn in)
- Fabric paint (or acrylic paint and fabric medium)
- Paint brush
- Metallic gold heat transfer vinyl
- Iron
- Pillow form
- Sewing machine and/or needle and thread (if your pillow case is significantly larger than your pillow form)
If you’re not as fanatical about scallops as I am, FrogTape® Shape Tape™ is also available in chevron and wave patterns!
I started by folding the top 4″ of my pillow case over so that I could visualize what it would look like when sewn to fit my 20″ square pillow form. I used the FrogTape® Shape Tape™ to create a scalloped stripe pattern. The tape is super easy to apply – just remove the top half of the paper backing, press into place and then repeat for the bottom half. Make sure that the edges are firmly adhered to your fabric!
I didn’t have enough black fabric paint for my pillow, so I made my own by mixing a 2:1 ratio of acrylic paint and fabric medium.
The coolest thing about the FrogTape® Shape Tape™ (aside from the awesome shape, of course!) is the PaintBlock® technology. The tape contains a super absorbent polymer that reacts instantly with the water in the paint to create a micro-barrier that seals the tape and prevents edge bleed. It’s incredible how well this stuff works!
Allow the paint to dry until it’s about 80% finished, and then carefully peel up the tape.
Look at those crisp clean edges!
Allow the paint to dry completely and then use the iron to heat-set the paint if necessary.
My pillow cover was several inches too long for my pillow form, so I flipped it inside out, sewed a new seam 4″ from the edge and then trimmed the excess fabric. Easy peasy!
I wanted to add a little bit of extra pizzazz to my pillow, so I cut a heart from metallic gold heat transfer vinyl and ironed it on to the pillow cover.
Finish up by stuffing the case with the pillow form, and then toss your stylish new pillow on to your bed or sofa! I love when a quick and easy project turns out even better than I expected!

I love the scallops! I had no idea they made scallop tape. I’m thinking that would make great shingles on the dollhouse that I need to paint!

I’ve had my eye on this tape since I saw it in a magazine. I want the chevron tape to make pillows for my son’s reading nook.
