April was an incredibly busy month around here. We started the month with the prep and execution of a super huge garage sale followed by endless nights of baseball games and soccer practices. We dyed Easter eggs by the gazillions, hung out with friends during spring break, completed a homeschool unit on health and the human body, recreated famous works of art, and discovered a new skatepark. We went to a big family Easter party and egg hunted with sixty of my closest relatives, and naturally, made lots of food and goodies for the event. My in-laws came into town for ten days to celebrate Easter with us and to help with the kids while I was out of town at the SNAP conference in Salt Lake City last week (recap post coming soon!).
Oh, and somewhere in the mix (on Easter, actually!), my middle son, Sutton, turned seven. Since his birthday fell in the middle of the holiday chaos, we decided to forgo a traditional birthday party since he got to spend the day with a whole bunch of fun family members. We had a cake and presents for him at the Easter celebration, but I still felt badly that we hadn’t made a huge deal about his birthday this year. When I got back home from my conference I decided to make a special batch of belated birthday cupcakes just for him.

I wanted to do something special to jazz up my basic cupcakes, so I printed out these adorable rainbow birthday printables from 100 Directions to decorate them.
I printed the files on to cardstock and cut out the elements I wanted to use. Next, I used a tiny dab of hot glue on the end of a toothpick to turn the designs into cupcake picks. The whole process was super simple, and it only took me about ten minutes to create all of my decorations.
It’s amazing how a tiny bit of effort can make such a BIG difference in the overall presentation!
Sutton was thrilled with his birthday cupcakes, and I was glad that I had done something special to help him celebrate his birthday (even if we were a few days late!). My other boys were just as excited by the fact that we got to have “fancy cupcakes” (as my 8-year-old called them!), so I think I may need to find more reasons to whip out a batch of dressed up cupcakes now and then!
