Blogger Confession: I really dislike decorating for fall, especially in September. Here in northern California it stays hot well in to October (case in point, it’s 90 degrees out right now as I’m writing this), and our leaves don’t even start changing colors or dropping from the trees until around Halloween. I generally decorate my mantle for fall after Halloween and keep it up until Thanksgiving – that’s the time of year that feels like fall around here.
During September my mantel is usually decorated with a back-to-school theme, but this year my boys went back to school in August, and I was still enjoying my summer decor too much to take it down. I kept it up until last week when an exceptionally cool morning forced me to wear a light sweater, and I realized that my summer themed days were coming to an end. So, I was left with an empty mantel and no desire to put up fall decorations yet. I contemplated for about half a minute as to whether or not it was too early to break out the Halloween bins, and then I rationalized by telling myself that Hobby Lobby has had Christmas decorations out since July…surely six weeks of Halloween isn’t all that inappropriate? Besides, it is one of our favorite holidays!
The mantel is sort of a hodge podge of breakable items that I didn’t want Simon to get his hands on, so it may change a bit as I dig more and more items out of the storage tubs, but the real star of the show is my new “BEWARE” banner from Mom and Me Scrapbooking. It came to me as a kit with pre-cut paper pieces and embellishments, so it was a snap to put together!
If you also love this banner and are in the Salt Lake City area (or would be willing to travel!), Mommy and Me Scrapbooking is hosting a Scrap All Night Retreat on October 10-12, 2013. Karen Petersen will be teaching hands-on classes where participants will make four different projects including this Halloween banner, a 6×6 Christmas book, Halloween cards and Christmas tags. There will also be additional classes by guest vendors, goodie bags, giveaways and lots of inspiration! It sounds like a perfect getaway weekend for a group of girlfriends, so hop on over to their blog for more details and registration information.
