Hi there! I’m Daniëlle from the Netherlands, and I am very excited about my fist contribution to Happiness is Homemade. You can read more about me on the ‘Meet the Team’ page, and of course you’re more than welcome to stop by at my own blog Food Love and Happiness. But enough about that, let’s talk Halloween!

I just love this holiday. Unfortunately I live in Holland and we don’t celebrate it in the same way you guys do. Most people don’t do anything about it, I personally can’t wait until we declare it a national holiday! 😉 So what else could I do for my first post than to share a fun recipe for Halloween!?

Who doesn’t love chocolate chip cookies!? You can jazz them up for a perfect Halloween snack very easily. Another great benefit: it’s low-budget! Who said having a Halloween party has to be expensive?

To make about 12 cookies, you’ll need:
140 grams plain flour
80 grams soft butter, diced
100 grams sugar
100 grams dark chocolate (with at least 70% cacao)
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon baking powder
a pinch of salt
bakery paper and cling film
a toothpick

Finely chop the chocolate with a sharp knife. Whisk the egg yolk with the sugar until you get a creamy light yellow mixture. Add the soft butter, the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt. Knead the dough and then add the chocolate. Mix the chocolate into the dough.

Create a roll of the dough, wrap it in plastic and let the dough rest in the fridge for at least one hour.

Preheat the oven to 180 C degrees (approx 350 degrees F). Prepare a baking sheet lined with some bakery paper. Cut the roll into 12 slices and place them on the baking tray. Bake the cookies about 10 minutes, or until golden brown. The cookies are still a bit soft, but don’t worry, they will harden.

fun halloween spider cookiesNow the cookies are baked, you are going to create the spiders. Straight out of the oven so the chocolate is stil hot and melted, you use a toothpick to drag out ‘legs’ from the melted chocolate chips. Create as much spiders as you like. These classic chocolate chip cookies are now easily transformed to creepy Halloween spider cookies!
