There’s a good chance that you’ve likely heard of Kiwi Crate since they’ve been in the media and busy winning all kinds of awards lately, but if you’re not familiar with them, Kiwi Crate is a monthly subscription service that provides all the hands-on materials to inspire creative, educational fun for children (recommended age is 3-8). There’s nothing easier than opening a box with all the supplies and instructions organized and ready to go!
There is always so much anticipation about what could possibly be inside the box. Past themes have included color, music, robots, safari, dinosaurs, and more, so it’s always a fun surprise! I’m really looking forward to their Summer Adventure Series which will focus on camping, the beach, and amusement park fun from June – August.
This month’s theme was “Farm Fun,” and the main activities were a mini farm plot garden and barnyard friends finger puppets. The Explore magazine was packed with additional activities including a cut-and-assemble weathervane craft, games, recommended books for additional reading, and additional craft activities using items you likely already have on-hand.
My older boys (age 7 & 8) couldn’t wait to dive into the mini garden activity. The set included a heavyweight cardboard “garden plot,” plastic garden boxes, craft sticks, Wonder Soil, a pipette, grass and radish seeds, an observation chart and easy to follow instructions.
They built their garden plots and added to Wonder Soil tablets. Next, a few drops of water turned the tablets into a tray full of rich soil! They were totally enthralled with this step, and I think they would have happily hydrated Wonder Soil all day if we had had more tablets!
Add the seeds and record your observations on the chart. The garden tray isn’t very deep, so it’s a little difficult to get all of the seeds pressed down into the soil as opposed to just sitting on top of it…but luckily radish and grass seed will quickly sprout either way, so don’t worry if some of the seeds are still exposed.
Add a craft stick fence and a couple of garden markers, and you’re all done!
Our radish seeds were already sprouting just a few hours later, and by Day Three they were so big that we transplanted them outside into our large garden outdoors to give them more room to grow. The rapid growth made it extra fun for the boys to record their observations and keep a detailed chart of their findings.
When Simon (age 3) got home from preschool that day, he immediately wanted to join in the fun, too. These barnyard friends finger puppets were perfect for him!
The pieces are all pre-cut and adhesive backed (with a really strong adhesive!), so all he had to do was look at the pictures for reference and assemble his puppets.
He seriously couldn’t get enough of this craft! We’ve been having barnyard friend puppet shows for the past few days now, and I foresee a lot more of them in our future!
If you’d like to try out a Kiwi Crate of your own, I have an exclusive offer just for you! Sign up now and receive 25% off of the first month of a new subscription (between May 26-June 30) using code SUMMER25. Happy crafting!
