Supplies Used for Mermaid Tumblers:

As I was using my Cricut Maker to make these mermaid tumblers, I realized that today is my Cricut Maker-versary (woohoo!) – exactly one year since I got my hands on my very own Cricut Maker, and I haven’t touched another machine since! In the past year, I’ve talked a LOT about my love for the Maker, and I’ve made and shared more Cricut projects than I ever have before (and those are just the projects that were cute and blog-worthy enough to make it on to the website!). Honestly, I can’t even tell you how game-changing (and life-changing!) the Cricut Maker has been for me!

The Cricut Maker truly is the ultimate professional-grade machine, cutting everything from delicate tissue paper to silky fabrics to wood! The Adaptive Tool System allows you to quickly and easily switch between the different blades required for each material and is super awesome for future expandability – Cricut is always working on creating awesome new tools, so I can’t wait to see what they come up with next! They recently released two new Scoring Wheels for razor-sharp creases in cardstock, poster board, and more, and I’m super excited to play around with them and share some more new projects with you!

How to Curve Text for Tumblers in Cricut Design Space

Because a tumbler has a conical curve to the surface, a line of straight text will not appear straight once you apply it to the tumbler.

The center of the design looks okay, but the wider that your lines of text are, the more that the edges of the lines will curve up/down. Not exactly the look we’re going for!

(Note: On a tumbler, I normally would design lines of a text a little bit smaller and closely spaced than I show in these designs, but for the educational purpose of teaching about curved text, the larger/wider text shows off the changes best. If you would like to recreate these tumblers using the provided Cricut Design Space project links, the lines of text are fully editable if you wish to make them a bit smaller!)

So, how do you curve text for tumblers so that it looks straight?

Take a peek at this basic tumbler template, and you’ll notice right away that the lines are curved, but not only are they curved, there are varying degrees of curvature as you move from top to bottom – text at the top of the tumbler will require less curvature than text at the bottom of the cup.

Cricut Design Space will only allow you to curve individual lines of text, so if your design has multiple lines of text, each one will need to be separated into its own text block. For this “Little Mermaid” inspired tumbler, first select the top line of text and use the curve tool to set the diameter to 45.

Line #2 should be curved at a diameter of 40.

Curve Line #3 at a diameter of 35 and Line #4 at 30.

Note: depending on the height of your design, you may wish to go back and slightly adjust these numbers so that the fit is correct on your tumbler. Generally, text at the top of the tumbler should be curved with a diameter of 45 and text at the bottom should be curved at 30 with the lines in between adjusted accordingly.

I added some fun Little Mermaid-ish embellishments to the tumbler with Permanent Premium Vinyl and Holographic Vinyl. The Permanent Premium Vinyl is dishwasher safe, but the Holographic Vinyl is recommended for hand-washing only. Since these tumblers were marked “Hand Wash Only,” I knew that it would be okay for me to use them both in combination. The Permanent Premium Vinyl comes in several shades with a “pearl” finish, and I seriously can’t get enough of it! The subtle shimmer is SO pretty and perfect for mermaids!

  1. Love this tutorial! I’ve been struggling to curl my text in Design Space, and this post made it so much easier to understand. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have been looking for the information about what to set the curves at for tumblers with little to no luck. Just made my first one with your information and it looks perfect! Thank you!!

  3. Thank you so much!!!! That is the first blog I have found on how to introduce curvature to my design without a lot of extraneous …. bleep!I appreciate that because I love efficiency yet I also need more than one example.

    1. The concept is the same, but the curvature will be different on bowls than it is for tumblers. The best way to determine the curvature is to try to make a template of the bowl like we did with the tumbler here so that you can lay out the text over the template to mimic the appropriate curve.

  4. I don’t have a curve button? I tried on my phone, iPad, and Mac and there is no curve button that I’m seeing.

    1. Hi Kristina,

The curve button is only available on the desktop version of Design Space, so it won’t appear on your phone or iPad, but you should see it on your Mac! I’m attaching a screenshot to show you the location. Make sure that you have the text object selected so that the text menu appears!

      1. Unfortunately it was not there when I was on my Mac. I figured that was the c are with my phone and iPad, but it still didn’t show on the Mac, there was only the alignment and advanced option so I’m not sure what else to try.

  5. How would you curve an image? I’m sorry if this was mentioned and I glossed over it (very possible!) but I have the lines of font ready to go and I’m not sure what degree I should use on an image that spans about the height of two lines!

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Kate! At this time, you can only curve text in Design Space and not images. For most images, you won’t notice the curvature (or lack thereof) the same way that you do with lines of text.

  6. states the links for the design is set to private so you can’t access it. I have a bunch of tumbles sitting in my closet and gave up after the first one. It just didn’t look right and I kept thinking the vinyl wouldn’t stay on. I was told it takes a while for it to adhere to the tumbler.

    1. I’m so sorry about that, Mary! When Cricut recently moved over to a desktop version of their software, some of our project links stopped working or began showing up as private instead of public. I have updated all of the links, so they should all work now, with the exception of the “Mermaid at Heart” design. I’m still working on getting that one to work again. Please note that when you click on the link to open the project, it will take a few additional moments to load into Design Space once the program opens.

I recommend using permanent vinyl on tumblers for best results. If you’re having issues with it sticking, try wiping down the surface of your cup with isopropyl alcohol (and allowing it to dry) before applying the vinyl. It should stick right from the start! 🙂

    1. This template and the measurements were designed for 16-20 oz tumblers, but the method will work for other sizes as well – you may need to play around with the numbers a bit if you’re working with a surface that has a slightly different curvature.

    1. I love the font, the design and the tumblers. Where do you get your tumblers and what is the font? Thx so much!
