Have you heard of One Little Word? It started in 2006 when Ali Edwards decided to choose one single word to become her focus for the upcoming year, and today One Little Word has grown into a movement of people looking to integrate their particular word into their daily lives. A quick Instagram search of the hashtag #onelittleword will produce loads of gorgeous photos overlaid with words such as focus, balance, brave, create, organize, and many, many more.
As Ali says, “And what do you do with this one little word? You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.”
I have never officially participated in the One Little Word workshop, but I felt compelled to sign myself up this year so that I don’t lose focus of my word halfway through the year like I have in the past. In previous years I chose Simplify, Organize and Joy as my words for the year, and I have to admit that although I started the year with enthusiasm for those words, I didn’t integrate them into the latter part of the year as often as I had hoped. I have heard nothing but rave reviews about Ali’s workshops, so I’m crossing my fingers that 2014 will be my year.

I considered all of these words for my 2014 One Little Word – peace, focus, discover, embrace, be, grow, and respect, but in the end I decided on a word that I think encompasses pieces of them all – IMPROVE. Improving efficiency will require focus. Self improvement will require growth, peace, respect and discovery. Improvements at home will require me to embrace the little moments and just be. Our homeschool goals are to improve skills and grow confidence. Improve covers all aspects of my life, and no matter what area of my life is the focus, there is always room to improve.
(I won’t even get into all of the ways that I’d like to improve my home decor in 2014, but it’s going to start with lots of paint and some new flooring!)
