We love snack foods around here, but I don’t love the high fat, sodium, and calorie contents of most pre-packaged snacks. My boys are huge fans of french fries (who isn’t?), so to up the nutritional value and slash the calories, I like to make our own baked french fries with sweet potatoes. Last week I came up with a recipe for a spicy sweet potato fry that was knock-your-socks-off good!
I started with a white sweet potato – did you know that there even is such a thing? I honestly had only eaten orange sweet potatoes up until the other day, but when my son grabbed a white sweet potato at the supermarket, I decided to give it a shot. (Spoiler alert: it was amazing!)
Cut the sweet potatoes (2-4 depending on size) in to thin strips, place inside a plastic bag, and toss with 1 tsp. of cornstarch. This will help absorb the excess moisture and result in a fry that is crispy, not soggy.
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Mix together 1 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. black pepper, 1/2 tsp. garlic powder, 1/2 tsp. paprika, and 1/4 tsp. onion powder. Add 1 tbsp. of olive oil and 1 tsp. of Texas Pete Garlic Hot Sauce to the bag of sweet potato strips, shake, and then add the spice mixture. Shake again until the fries are well covered with the seasonings. Spread on a parchment lined baking sheet and top with a light sprinkling of chili powder.
Bake for 15 minutes, turn the fries over, and bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the edges are browned and crispy. YUM! Serve with ketchup for dipping – if you want to kick up the spiciness, add some of the Texas Pete Hot Sauce to the ketchup as well!
I shared a sneak peek of this recipe on Instagram the other day, and I warned everyone that this post was probably going to involve some haphazard and hasty food styling…because I could NOT stop eating the fries as I was trying to photograph them! They are seriously SO incredibly good!
Most of the photo shoot looked like this, really. My boys were at an appointment while I was cooking these fries, but they came home and polished off the rest of them (even after they’d been sitting out at room temp for about an hour!) in about two minutes flat (even after they’d been sitting out at room temp for about an hour!). We ALL couldn’t get enough of them!
So now that I’ve added Texas Pete Hot Sauce to this winning recipe, I can’t wait to try out some more of their Texas Pete Hot Sauce recipes. I’ll be sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter, and you should, too! (Click here to find Texas Pete Hot Sauce in your area) Have you ever added hot sauce to a recipe? I’d love to hear about it!
