Last winter I knocked your socks off with my quick and easy DIY peppermint soap that you can whip up in under 10 minutes (it makes a perfect holiday gift idea for friends and neighbors!), and this year I thought I’d try my hand at making a DIY pumpkin spice soap for fall…and it turned out even better than I expected! It has all of the wonderful scents of autumn wrapped up into one tiny little package!

Supplies for Pumpkin Spice Soap

What You’ll Need:

DIY Watermelon Soap mixing intervals instructionsI use about 1 lb (or half of the block) of soap base at a time which makes four large 4-ounce soaps. The block of shea butter soap base is smooth and silky, and it cuts easily with a kitchen knife. I slice the soap base into cubes, place them inside a 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup, and melt in the microwave in 20-30 second increments, stirring well after each microwave session to ensure that the soap is completely melted. For 1 lb of soap, I generally microwave for 30 seconds, stir, microwave for another 30 seconds, stir again, and microwave a final time for 20 seconds.

When the soap is completely melted, stir in 2 tablespoons of pumpkin pie spice and a few drops of red and yellow soap colorant. I added 2 drops of red and 4 drops of yellow color to my soap because I wanted it to have a subtle color instead of being bright orange. If you prefer a brighter orange, just add more colorant until you reach the desired shade. No need to worry about the color coming off on your body in the shower since the colorant is designed specifically for this purpose. Pour the melted soap into the soap mold, and allow to sit undisturbed until cool (about 30 minutes or so). Remove & enjoy!   DIY Pumpkin Spice Soap TutorialI’m thinking that these soaps would also make great gifts for teachers (you can never have too much soap in a classroom, right?), and they would also make an awesome fundraiser or craft fair item.

  1. I used the art minds brand but notice that the soaps are sticky to touch. I’ve done 2 separate batches and even chchecked the humidity in my space. What could be caucausing this? I want to package these as gifts but thethere’s a sticky residue on the inside of thr kraft bags…..do you have any solutions for how to avoid this? Maybe another brand of soap base?

    Thanks

    1. Hmm, I haven’t heard of this issue before, Ava. I use the Life of the Party brand soap base (FOUND HERE), and though it has a slightly smooth and silky feel to the touch, it isn’t sticky at all. Perhaps if you wrap the soap with paper (maybe waxed paper or parchment paper) before putting it in the kraft bags that would help alleviate your issue. Good luck! 🙂

  2. I made this soap and it turned brown! I was able to mix some red and get a pretty burgundy color, but i was wondering if you had ideas on what went wrong?

    1. Sorry to hear that! Different brands of pumpkin spice can cause variation in the color due to the different amounts of each spice in the blend and the quality of spices between brands.

    1. Hi Wendy, I have not tried adding castor oil, so I’m not sure what the effect would be. If you try it, please come back and let me know the results! 🙂

  3. WOW. I just came across this on Pinterest and I love it! I’ve always wanted to make soap but I didn’t want to get into using all those harsh chemicals etc I did not know there was such as thing as a soap base.. This is absolutely fantastic and you are super awesome! Thanks so much for sharing!

  4. Hi Heidi, Just came across your pumpkin spice soap recipe, I have a soap and candle company and I use the canned pumpkin along with the spice.

  5. I want to make the peppermint and pumpkin soaps! Do you have one more idea/recipe to make it a holiday trio for gift-giving? Also – how do you package the soaps to give as gifts?

    1. I have at least two more in the works that will be posted in the next couple of weeks (with plenty of time to make them before the holidays!). I would wrap each individual scent in plastic wrap before packaging them all together. 🙂

  6. This sounds like so much fun to make, I HAVE to try it!! Would you share your peppermint one with me, I missed it last year and would love to try that also.

  7. I can’t believe you can really make that in 10 minutes… or I must be very slow, that’s also a possibility 🙂

  8. Great idea! I want to make these for Christmas gifts for my coworkers, what would you recommend for gift packing? Is the soap soft or do you think it would retain its shape if I put it in a mason jar or something? Thanks!!

  9. I want to try this but was wondering- have you attempted to add anything to it like oatmeal, etc. to make them scrubbing bars? I was wondering if you would need to thin out the soap base if you added something like this

    1. Hi Dena, I haven’t ever attempted to add any heavier additives to this base, so I’m not sure how well it would work. If you try it, I’d love to hear how it turns out!

  10. How long will this soap keep? I want to make the pumpkin and peppermint this weekend and give away as gifts through Thanksgiving and Christmas.

    1. Hi Courtney! I still have a couple bars of soap that I made last year at this time, and it’s as good as new. The swirled color in the peppermint may start to blend into pink after a few months depending on the soap base that you use. I haven’t had this issue with the one that I mention above, but I did hear from a couple of other people using a different kind of base that theirs weren’t quite as swirly looking after a few months. With only 2 months until Christmas though, I’d imagine that you’ll be okay making it this weekend! 🙂

  11. I’m one of those freaks that loves all things Pumpkin Spice and I didn’t even know I could make SOAP! This is amazing and will for sure be a new fall staple in my house!

  12. Hi Jennifer. I made the Pumpkin Pie soap. Loved it! I was able to get 14 bars out of the 2# Shea butter container. I am now going to make the peppermint. I also have many more E.O.’s to try and plan on mixing and matching to find my favorites! Thanks for inspiring me!

    1. Absolutely! Be sure to use a suspension based formula (if available) so that the spice particles stay suspended throughout the soap instead of settling to the bottom. 🙂

  13. This is such a great idea! I especailly love the smell of pumpkin spice! Great for the holidays! 😀 Cant wait to try this out! I’m gonna share this on FB. 🙂
