My boys love to help decorate our mantel for holidays, so this week they created this sweet watercolor doily banner to add a little bit of springtime cheer. They remind me of Easter eggs and give the perfect splash of color to the area.

supplies for making watercolor doily banner

All you’ll need for this craft are 10″ circular paper doilies, liquid watercolor paints and a length of twine. We love Colorations Liquid Watercolors from Discount School Supply because they have a wide assortment of colors that are bright and bold (but dilute really well!), and they clean up easily. I bought a 16-pack of assorted colors over two years ago, and we’ve barely used 1/4 of the bottles even though we use the paints often.

Lay some paper towels underneath the doily and start painting! We used dry doilies because we wanted our colors to stay bright, but a wet-on-wet watercolor technique (moisten the doily before painting) will produce softer colors and tie-dyed effect.

Allow to dry completely.

Simply fold the doilies in half, and lay them over a length of twine to create the banner.

Easy peasy and super cute! My five and seven-year-olds made most of the doilies in this banner, but the project is appropriate for any age group – toddlers through adults!
